SPUNKY
1981-2006

I was only four years old when I met the best friend I'd ever know
He was enormous and furry, with a  long tale and big nose
He had big heavy feet, and two small ears
And even with his size I had no fears
I had to use a bucket to hop on his back
I also used that bucket to put on his tack
He would put his head down low for me to put his halter and bridle on

He would stand so patiently when he knew I was doing it all wrong
I spent every moment I could with him even though we lived far apart
When I was gone, I knew we were always in each others hearts
I wrote letters to him until I could visit again
He was so happy when he finally saw me coming towards his pen
We were a team that had no limits
from moving cows to barrel racing, we were it.
He showed me to be confident when we ran our race
He said trust me I'll beat the fastest pace
And that is exactly what he did, for the first time I felt fame
From pee wee, to novice, champions we became
Because of him, I became who I'm suppose to be
A horse crazy girl, living on a ranch is what I see
He taught me confidence when I felt off track
He said when life gets hard, just picture yourself upon my back
Remember I will always be there to carry you through, he would say
And never feel alone, because in your heart I will stay
The day I knew Spunky had to go
Was the hardest day I'll every know
But he wouldn't want me to be sad
He would only want me to be glad
Glad for our best friendship that I came to know
And our love, in my heart that will forever glow
There will never be another Spunky
No one is every that Lucky
But what there will be is many more horses to love
Because they will all carry a little of Spunky in them coming from above
