Not sure were we were going, I snuggled up close and made no fuss.
We soon arrived with a destination stop.
And out of the truck I fell, with a tumbling flop.
There was welcoming smells of horses and cattle that brought a huge smile to my face.
For I know where I want to be, living on a ranch is my place.
I am a pretty proud, mighty, rough and tough cow dog.
And working a ranch with livestock is my top priority job.
The exciting part of arriving here, was as I looked around,
Lots of horses, cattle, a cat or two, but no other dogs were to be found.
Oh, yes, this is what I was hoping for.
I will be top dog, an underdog, no more.
But then in that same instance, there he appeared,
The mightiest, toughest, smartest looking cow dog, I felt fear.
Jack, they called him, he looked like it to.
Strong and bold, a straight and narrow eye, that looked right through you.
He didn't look too happy to see me, that was no doubt.
I started to shake and worry, I had no clout.
I looked way up at the tall blonde one.
She had pure devotion in her eyes to this one son.
Almost a worried look, like she had disappointed him in bringing me home.
But Jack never gave her that look back, he just stared at me with his teeth shown.
Just be cool, I thought, turn on your charm.
So I ran up and greeted him, and he headed for the barn.
I followed close in tow.
I told him everything he knew, I wanted to know.
I wanted him to teach me to be a cow dog, watch dog, herding and guarding.
How to help with feeding, sorting, riding pasture and branding.
He told me to relax, things take time, and he was retired.
And if didn't calm down and be smart, I would get fired.
He told me for now, to just stay out of his way.
And so I did, at least for the rest of that day.
I told him I just wanted to be friends.
He told me there is work to be done, cow dogs don't sit around like a couple of hens.
But from the day I flopped out of that pick up truck,
Admiration for him was how I was struck.
And as the days went by, and we were always together.
At the end of the day, I'd lay my little head down, next to my big brother.
